I was fortunate enough to have my 12 year old nephew visit for a week of his summer vacation. Of course, I did my best to brain wash him into the world of rock. We managed three rock hounding adventures during his short stay. Here's a few photos.
New Rock-hound
There's agate slabs hiding among all that basalt. He didn't believe me at first!
Old Rock-hound
That's me exhibiting my "cat like" movements. However, one wrong move and you are either swimming, or visiting the proctologist.
There's Agate Slabs Hiding Among All That Basalt
Told ya! This was a good day if you are into agate coated in a red and yellow jasper crust.
Big Salmon River Suspension Bridge
That's NOT a man purse! It a discrete collection bag for gathering in areas where you really shouldn't be collecting. I did borrow it from the wife though.
Fundy Trail Beach
That's not sand. It's about a mile of surf polished beak rock ready for the tumbler as viewed from an elevation of about 300 feet. All you have to do is go and get it! The hard part is the 300 feet. It's about a 30 minute hike along a steep (and slippery) walking trail, so collecting is limiting to how much you can drag out.
Surf Pounded Beach Rock
As viewed from an elevation of 30 inches. Photographed wet to enhance the glare.
It Only Looks Dangerous
Watch your step, and don't tell my Mom where my Uncle took me.
I Am A Rock, I Am Am Island (Sorry Paul)
This is why you should only venture out on a FALLING tide.
I Don't See What's So Great About All This Agate
At least that was the story until I let my nephew pick a bag of rock out of my tumbled bin. It appears my nephew has a preference for agate too. He will be thrilled when I mail off some finished pieces of the rocks that he helped find this summer.
Hope you enjoy the photos and my ramblings.
Darryl.
