Ah you guy's sucked me into messing around with old machinary. Just picked this up for $30 Motor runs fine 1/2 hp Central Lathe needs belt I might have to change the pulley's. If I can't do anything with it I will junk it. Beats $30 bucks in my pocket. Now to find a belt and convert it maybe one 80 diamond wheel. Add a pan and drip area. I will check at HF this weekend look at the newer models belts. Any ideas appreciated or I toast it. Now to see if I can add some pictures. I hope they are okay for pictures size etc. \ CMan

I think you could turn that into a nice polisher, at least. With sufficient shielding, bearings, and shafts, I think a grinder can be made.

Thanks I felt I might be able to extend out. If not I will mount other Grinders on it and Tumbler to base. Come other guy's will come up with some great ideas. Whats pretty cool is the lever to adjust belt with speeds of RPM. If I find a belt around somewhere. I will clean up saw dust soon as sun goes down. To darn hot had enough with air conditioning in garage.

$30.00 for a motor, the pulleys, and the barrings is not a bad deal. Try buying them alone and you will spend much more.

cman Good find! & well worth it! What size shaft is coming out of it? Are you handy? (ie...do you know which end of a screwdriver works best as a chisel or would you hurt yourself with a picture of one ;D). If it's less than 1", you can get a 1" shaft 24" long and have a hole drilled that size and threaded to match (and a 1/4" (?) hole drilled 1/2" deep in the other end). Then thread a nut on the motor unit, then the new shaft and use the nut to back lock the new shaft in place. (Or have a coupler made). Use the tail stock to support the other end of the shaft and you got yourself the makings of a great cabber! Check Ace Hardware, NAPA, Grainger etc. for belts too. My model www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=45276 came with a sanding plate for the other side, I can't remember if is built into the pulley or not (it may just be a part change to have it available to you). Keep us posted wih your progress!!! Dr Joe .

Awesome score! At my local farm store, the stepped pulleys are $22 each, the mandrel is $19, and a new 1/2 hp motor is just over $100! Looks like you've got the makings for one fine cabbing machine!

Cman, I'm assuming you have a general measurement of the length of belt you need. If not, tie a string around the pulleys to give you a ball park idea of length. Remove it knotted in a loop if at all possible. Then you'll need to measure the width of the groove. Take the string and width measurement to any reputable auto parts store. They should have a tool to measure the belt (string in your case) and given the width measurement have the belt you need, or something darn close.
Good luck! There's a belt out there with your name on it!

Nate,
I had a general idea 14 - 16 inch's. I did the string yesterday Autozone didn't have a measuring unit. The other auto shop had one but I needed the actual belt the way they measure. Not like the old measuring units I remember as a kid at garage. Anyways I can't find anything that small as of Monday.
I will try a little while longer until I rip the gut's out of this unit.
Later, CMan

Thanks Dr. Joe maybe they use those belts on the Shuttle for the toilet. I will stop at Granger Wed. Tried 2 places here today. Starting to think maybe best to buy a Lortone Arbor or Rascal. Everything sure adds up with worthless Fiat Dollars.
Rather have rocks. Later thanks,

Wow, I agree. Looks like a great belt, but 54 bucks for a 2 m long piece, ouch. I always hate it when the accessories cost more than the unit itself...
cman, you must be thinking of the same belt measuring deal I have used. It looks like a pulley cut in half and mounted on a yard stick.
I really find it hard to believe these belts are this hard to find! Be sure to let us know when you find one, it's probably the same one my drill press uses lol!

I will let you guy's know when and if I find one. I think it will be Grainger but its the tiny width. I tried pulling off the Pully's. Oh yea wrench won't fit must have used some Metric alien wrench.
Going to cut them off and junk this HF junk. Move on time is to costly at times and gas.
I will show either finished or deep six.

Cman, how wide are the grooves in the pulleys? I just picked up a belt for my self propelled mower today. it's a 3/8"x 32". It was the smallest one they had at the local farm store in by the electric motors and pulleys, and it was $3.99. I noticed they had shorter ones in the snowblower section, they were 10-20 dollars.
There was one a little shorter also in the automotive section also for $3.99.
I know Grainger sells them, I called them today too. A little pricey though at $13.99 for the belt I needed.
Check ebay too. My wife found the belt I needed on there for under 10 bucks including shipping.
Otherwise if you can find a belt the right width, but not short enough, just relocate the motor out some. That looks like a pretty nice metal box it's all housed in, and it wouldn't take much to weld or bolt an extension on there to mount the motor to.
Nate
PS, the dollar store probably has a set of metric allen wrenches. Otherwise it would just be a few dollars at home depot or a hardware store.
