I was looking on eBay for a UYv light under Raytech and saw this dop pot heated by a 100w light bulb. I was just wondering- has anyone ever tried using an Easty-Bake ove for this purpose?

If memory serves the easy bake was a 60w and I don't think it held a 150*F temp. (Then again I was playing with fire when these things came out and they held little interest to me ;D). (on another note...what's a UYv? ) Dr Joe .

I think he just fat fingered the y Dr. Joe, and is looking for a UV light... Funny thing, I just threw out one of these easy bake things. And yes it had a 60 watt bulb. Now that I think about it, there was probably more to save from it besides the cord...
Mark, you could probably just use a 100 watt bulb in a trouble light, and make a little stand to hold a clean tuna can (or something similar) over it for melting the wax in.

I wonder if I used a 25 watt buld instead, it might be cool enough. The easy bake probably reaches over 300 degrees if it can brown a cake...and I think the old ones used a bigger bulb. My daughter's uses a 60w, too, now that iI look at it. The easy bake has some thermal protection, I think. And, the easy bake is more Gooldbergian....

I use a little pot-pori pot from the goodwill, which preheats the wax pretty well. I use a combo of that and a heat gun to suppliment the heat process. I get my dop sticks all set, each with a blob of wax, before I start dopping preforms up. When Im ready, I reheat the dop-stick with the heat-gun, blowing down onto the dop while also preheating the preform cab at the same time. as the heat causes the dopwax to melt down onto the preform, I position the dop onto the cab, remove the heatgun, and lick my fingers to smooth the hot wax into positon. crude, but I like to dop up a day's worth of cabbing, first thing in the morning, while drinking my coffee.... LOL

hehe Tom, you can dop your cabs and keep your coffee warm at the same time ;D
I use a skillet I picked up for $5. One half is for warming cabs and the other half is for wax. Cheap, effective. A coffee cup warmer might also work. Steve

I've seen homemade dop pots that are basically a tin flashing housing (or something similar) over a light bulb. That's basically all the one that I have is, except there's a little well for the wax and the metal looks prettier.

Don't buy the Raytec UV. They suck. I bought one for my amber and sent it back. I had a florescent UV poster lite that worked better and was only $12. As for doping. I bought a used hotplate at a 2nd hand store. Works great and give lots of room to heat the stones. Just use a tin can for the wax.

I put a small coffee can on top of the bulb, its either a 60 or 75 watt, heats it up from plug in to finish between 5-10 mintues and have never had one pop off. Just cant see wasting money for fancy stuff when this does the same.
