A couple friends came over and made their first cab using a piece of Green Beryl (Emerald) in Pegmatite from the Crabtree Emerald Mine and I wrapped it in sterling for them. A couple of you might recognize them (you would know them as "WobanWicki"). Front and Back We did some wrapping together and she's on a roll. Donna (Damammy) worked with her at the Roundup in NC a few weeks ago and gave her tools and wire! Wish I had taken pics of the wrap she did (like her third one). It was great! Vicki wearing the emerald wrap and Rob at the grinder. He did an excellent job! Doesn't she look thrilled?!!

Very pretty. Hard to tell which is front and which is back, but I'm guessing the 2nd pic is the front, because it has a bit more flourish to the wires. Love the way you finished with the twisty wires. The cab is awesome. It looks like it might have been difficult to cab - very crystalline looking, and very fragile looking. Nice job!

Nope, LOL. Fooled ya! ;D Left one is the front, right is the back. It happened that way because we ran out of time and because I needed to keep the cab secure in the wrap (especially being emerald and all), but didn't want to cover the front of the cab and obscure its beauty. LOL, I ended up with that!
You are right, it took a couple applications of super glue, grinding off smooth after each application to fill and stabilize. (you might be able to tell the difference it makes in the front and back of the stone, didn't fill the back) Wasn't as difficult as many I've done though. We have a Red Beryl pegmatite, for instance, around here that I've collected that takes many more patches before I can really get to grinding on it. But, it's well worth the effort!

Yep! They're your homies! Had promised to do this with them way back in the spring, things finally settled down enough to do it.

I really like the stone and wrap, but those two I think I like much more!! ;D Vicki is the type of person I could only dream of being. Jo, I think you and Vicki are a lot alike I am sure it was a lot of fun teaching them. Jo, Crabtree, has a garnet type matrix that is not stable and it stains Quartz reddish. Which I like more than emerald but didn't finish this cab

And............Rob is an artist.......a REAL artist. You should see the paintings of the Crabtree and of Graves Mountain that he has done. None of that ink blot stuff they call art. Real, honest to goodness paintings that you can see the trees and ROCKS and flowers as in real life. And............Vicki likes hearts..........
that is a hint deeptime ;D ;D ;D
Donna and I both gave her some hearts at the roundup. And she picked up wirewrapping very quick.
Ken
P.S. She always looks thrilled. ;D

Ooooh Donna, that's beautiful. Can't wait to see what you do with it next. Almost a passionfruit color to it. Yes, we found out that we share some of the same basic fundamentals (like I've found with so many here), it was quite serendipitous how we got connected. Ken, you are so right in mentioning Rob being an artist. If anyone has the Jan 2009 issue of Pennsylvania Game News, Rob's art, "Wetland Wonder" made the cover. If you don't happen to have it, here's a peek: www.pgc.state.pa.us/pgc/lib/pgc/digestpdfs/2009/page85.pdfAnd Ken... believe it or not, I did give her a tumbled heart out of a beautiful salmony colored Rose Quartz that I found. Too cool you should mention it! She does very easily steal people's hearts! Also, I didn't mention that they brought a huge beautiful Autumn Unakite from Diamond Hill Mine (I think) and a really cool agate. As soon as I switch out my saw blade, I'm gonna cut some slabs and post. Would really like to have an ID on the agate as some of those slabs are going right straight back to Rob and Vicki. Jo

Jo, I don't think the unakite comes from Diamnd Hill as it is a crystal mine for quartz, skeletal quartz, smokey quartz and amethyst. A few jaspers, but not extensive. The unakite probably came from the Roanoke, Va area. I have found some beautiful stuff from there. Ken
