Shorty,
There are the sunstone mines out near plush which I think is pretty close to K Falls. Also north of Bend, there are some thunder egg mines - Richardson's ranch is one

I think OR has perhaps one of the best overall selections of rocks and gems in the United States. I'm particularly smitten with the agates, but there are a ton of other stones that can be collected on the beaches and rivers.
There are any number of good books out there that describe sites and such, and the internet is loaded with info.
I have been known on several occasions to drive hundreds of miles to get to the rock shows in Prineville, Madras and Bend, and there are lots of others...
Have fun!

Search on the internet for rock and gem clubs in your area, or just find a good rock store and I guarantee they'll be able to tell you what's happenin' in the hood. Getting hooked into a club is really the hot tip. They will probably sponsor field trips, and will be a great source of local info...
My vote is to support the local rock businesses, even if you pay a little more for rough or grit, because they can pay you back with the local knowledge.

Thanks for the link Rocky. Discovered a rock shop not far from here that I didn't even know existed. I'll have to call and see if they are still open. Kind of off the topic a bit. Somewhere on this board I remember someone was asking about making spheres. Just thought I'd let you all know that there is a shop in Elwood, Indiana called Spencer Lapidary (address and phone number are listed on the site that Rocky posted). The older gentleman that owns the store is a Master Sphere Maker. He's been making them for decades. I've been to his shop and he has some really awesome spheres. If someone needed more information he would be the man to talk to.
