Does anybody have experience with a split drum sander like this one? www.covington-engineering.com/drum_sander.htmI have a couple of Scott-Murray expanding drums that are starting to go, so I'll need replacements before long. I was also given several rolls of wet-dry SiC cloth in multiple grits, so I was thinking this might be a good solution. Otherwise, I'll have to buy new drums and find a good home for the sanding cloth. Thanks! Chuck

I learned on a home made unit with split drums. They called them "bumpy drums" when being kind. Every rotation there is a bump as the split passes the stone. You can only get SC paper in rolls. Covington still uses them on their unit with bearings on outside of drum (can't get a belt on without taking unit apart). All in all I'd never buy a new split drum. Used ones are really cheap since almost nobody wants them.

Thanks John! I almost PM'd you with this question because I was sure you would know.
I was afraid that split would cause a bump. Glad I asked.
Maybe I can figure out something else to do with the paper. Maybe I'll make laps.
