What program do you use to get these images? I particularly like the one next to the "4th"

I use Photoshop 6 or 8 or CS4 - depending on what computer I am at. But, I verified all the features needed are in "Elements". I think the freeware GIMP has everything, but I am still studying GIMP. Others have use paint programs and CorrelDraw.
The basic capability is just to select an area and copy/cut. We did several virtual-cab contests here about 2 years ago and folks pretty much used select-n-cut.
Knowing a little (not much) about image resolution is needed to avoid making selections that in the real world are too small or too large. If you can hold the slab and visually double-check that helps too.
Having a few tricks to get selections that go beyond oval or rectangle is a plus. Various tricks are 1) selecting a shape in another picture and then placing just the selection outline on the slab image. Another trick is to 2) select an oval or rectangle and use any built-in options to modify the shape of the selection.
A few more tricks to smooth selections or nudge them around is also helpful but not necessary.
It is helpful if the software supports layers, because then you can make a template layer to help with visualizing and selecting. You do need to also know how to rotate one of the layers.
Finally, the slightly beveled effect (not strictly necessary) is obtained by feathering the selection - I am not sure if GIMP has feathering.
I think we live within 30 miles of each other, so maybe we can meet up for a demo/tutorial.
In fact, I can do a pretty good demo using some kind of net-meeting. If someone would agree to start/help producing a virtual-cab tutorial, I would be glad to provide some online instruction.

It might be the fact that I've worked 8 days straight and only getting 3-4 hours sleep in between shifts, but my head hurts just reading all that. I pretty much got out of it that you live close and I have a lot to learn about slabbing. LOL Where'bouts do you go locally for hounding?

I am only here 15days at this point, so I don't go anywhere locally. But, I hear there is not much in the way of lapidary rock. I moved just under 4000lbs of rough and slabs, so mostly I will just be going to my garage for some time to come. Except for a few ebay purchases, the Topeka Rock & Gem show, and taking my sister's kids to the Houston ROck & Gem Show. If you need some starter rock to play with, give a shout and we can rummage some stuff out of what I moved.

When is the Topeka Rock and Gem show? Most shows that I've seen advertised don't really have a lot in the way of rough tumble rocks, more of the specimen's. But if I'm off work I may attend. I may take you up on the starter rock stuff. Let me see what I bring back from southern Mo. and Norther Ok next week. Thanks for your help!
P.S. I'm finally on vacation so I will check out your advise on the above!!

October 13, 14 Topeka Gem & Mineral Society Show, Ag Hall, 17th and Topeka Ave., Topeka, Kansas Blvd., 66612. 13th, 10-6; 14th, 10-5. M. Mowry, 785-267-2849, rock2plate@aol.com
Yes, I would be surprised if there was a lot of rough. Hoping for some slabs. Tumble rough is not really a show item.
I have some mostly orange Koi Jasper and some mostly brown pet wood and some dalmation jasper that would be good for tumble, as well as many bits of broken slab. I do plan to get rid (e.g. donate to clubs ...) the lower 300lbs of rock. Just need to find time to sort it.
