I tried to get the lighting right to show the chatoyancy in this one, but no can do. The little vertical striations at the bottom flash brilliant gold, but I just could not catch it. I think the stone is maybe some sort of amethyst, but it's the first I've seen with the gold flashes. Anyway, here it is: Thanks for indulging me! Tom

Good job! The cab appears to be Cacoxenite. If so, its fairly rare. These inclusions form in quartz, including amethyst.

"Cacoxenite". I'll add that to my growing cyclopedia of weird rock names! Thanks. I think it was a little slab that someone (Nancyid?) sent me in a box full of slabs. I made this cab and a little domed oval that also shows the chatoyance.
Thanks,
Tom

Whew Shannon, you nailed that ID dead on all right. Beautiful example of cacoxenite too. Those layers came out just right. Sometimes if the orientation is not correct, the little crystal planes will cause striations or pits in the stone but that stone came put terrific!....Mel

Thanks, guys! And to think - the way it came out was mostly pure accident on my part .... although I did notice the flash and tried to cut it so it would be vertical, not knowing any better. I still have one more little oval from this same stone I'm going to try to wrap - but it's smaller than the tips of my fingers, so my chances of success seem kinda limited! LOL!

Beautiful stone. The wrap sets it off nicely.
