I decided to try knapping after seeing some posts on here and watching some videos on youtube. It's pretty fun and probably the cheapest way to work stone. Tools cost less than $30 and consist of copper caps on scrap wood handles, a piece of tire from the side of the road made into a hand protector, a grinding wheel from harbor freight, and a pressure flaker from flintknappingtools.com (most expensive tool at $12). Videos I watched: www.youtube.com/user/BOHUNTERwww.youtube.com/user/paleomanjim

If those are first tries, you'll be very good at knapping. Good job.

The piece of tire is a great idea, pressing off a flake between the treads will let it run out farther.
You did omit something in your pic. of your tools !
The box of Band-Aids !
You look like your off to a great start there !!!

Pretty darn good first attempts. I always thought it was kind of like cabbing quietly. It suprises me that more people don't do it.

Pretty good for first points. You will have to make it to the Glass Buttes knappin come March. Lots of good people, plenty of material, and just a great learning experience overall. Woody

Thanks for sharing. I grew up and still live near Cahokia Mounds (Illinois). I've always wondered how flint knapping was done, so I watched a little of the videos you linked. Not at all how I imagined it! Flint knappers must have bruised thighs!
I think you did a great job on your first points! Not sure I could make anything recognizable.
Later, jeri
