Hey, ya'll I just wanted to show off a piece I found in my back yard which just happens to be a beach. Would you say this is one of those things you just collect and not tumble? How do you tell if a piece of coral is agatized or not? This to me looks more like calcite growing on it! What do you all think?!

Great find! Personally, I wouldn't tumble it.
Later, jeri

Looks like just plain coral - meaning not agatized. If you try tumbling, you'll end up with a bunch of sand. Agatized/fossilized would usually have all the holes filled. It would look like a rock with coral trapped inside it.

How do you dig it up? Just what do you have to go through to get it. Is there a particular place you go or do you just happen to live someplace you can go outside and start diggin'? Would like to have some just let me have details. I'd offer to trade but I don 't think I have anything you would like.

The plain coral can be worked with, but you'll have to do it gently by hand, a tumbler will pulverize it. The fresh coral skeleton is basically aragonite. I have seen pieces that have been hand cabbed, they look like ivory.
