I just joined this forum, though I have been lurking around and reading the posts for over a week. Lots of knowledgeable and very talented people here. I've already learned a lot and my mouth is drooling over some of the fantastic pieces that some of you have been showing. My partner and I just bought out a rather well equipped lapidary shop and are just now getting things set up and checked out. George works with scrimshaw and 2-part resin and I work with driftwood, seashell and fused glass. We think the addition of the lapidary equipment is going to allow us to incorporate rock in with the other materials to create some very interesting pieces. Thanks for having me. Welcome to the list! - Your a few hours away from me as I'm in The Dalles. Am curious though - you mentioned your partner works with two part resin. Is it more of a suraface coating like the old decopaug (spelling on that one LOL) or does he do the old time resin/rock slab tables?
Again Welcome!

Jason Hi Jason, You are in a better part of the state to rock hound than I am. I love the Oregon Coast, but unless you like basalt, this isn't the best area to find good slabbing materials. I'm particularly intrigued with some of the jaspers, agates, and thunder eggs that come from the other side of the state. George has a background from Arizona and he has been doing some stuff in turquoise and fire opal. I haven't watched him mix the resin yet, but he was working on a piece the other day while I was in the shop and he was out front manning the gallery. The results were some turquoise wire wrapped with copper and filled with this resin. Nice looking piece. He has some rather large murals hanging in the store where he has combined this resin with other materials. Interesting stuff, but I think I will probably stick more with the fused glass. Chief Jim

Welcome to the boards! I've been down to Depoe Bay several times, what a beautiful place to live. You do live near some good beach agate collecting locations. I usually come out to the Newport area to collect once or twice in the winter. You can find gem grade blue beach agates there.

My wife and I make wind chimes using driftwood, seashells and scrap art glass. Both areas have some agates, but most of the ones I have seen have been too small for our use in the chimes. For the last week or so the weather has been driving some heavy swells (25-30 feet) on to the beaches (happening again even as I type this). There should be some interesting stuff coming ashore and/or being uncovered. Unfortunately, I ruptured a disc in my back and will be going in for surgery early next month. Merry Christmas to me! I expect this is going to keep me off the beach for quite some time. Hopefully I will still be able to sit and cut cabs and polish glass while I rehab. This getting old ain't for wimps! Chief Jim
