What is the best way to break up a large chunk that probably weighs about a pound to a pound and a half. I would put a picture of it on my message, but I don't know how to do that. If someone could help me with that I would appreciate it.

i wrap my big rocks in a towel or shirt so no pieces can get away from me and whack 'em with a hammer over and over until they break. i just use a regular household hammer but have been eyeballing a true rock hammer. i'd prefer to not use the towel or shirt as i can get a better lick in but the pieces can fly really far and i've lost some in the grass and leaves that way. i have some concreted areas that serve no purpose except for rock-busting - like a short piece of sidewalk behind my house that i can't for the life of me figure what it's original purpose was - it's like a short runway surrounded by grass. whatever you wrap it in will tear to pieces in the process. you might want to wear safety goggles. i was raised in the 60's back when moms would let the kids use hammers, knives, scissors just be back at dark so i don't have very good safety skills. kim

Hi Tami, I'll try to post the pic instead of the link. I'm not sure if it will work. It should. Anyway, nice piece of Mahogany. But a piece that size I would just hold in my left hand firmly, with a heavy leather glove on of course. And then crack it pretty hard with the round end of a ball peen hammer. You will be surprized how easy it is to bust up obsidian. It is very glass-like, and just as easy to break. And yes, please wear safety glasses and a long sleeved shirt. Shards of obsidian are super sharp so be careful! Good luck, Don
