Hi all, I found this tubular green emerald like specimen. on the first look i thought it was emerald so i polished it so see whats within, but its not emerald. i felt it is volcanic glass/obsidian but its very hard, heavy and solid. I heard somewhere if its glass it will not scratch on quartz as glass is less harder than quartz, but it did scratch on quartz. It is translucent and has small carbon like inclusions. It takes a great polish. #1 #2 #3 #4 #5 Any info what it could be? Harryz

I have no idea what it is, but it's very neat! I'll be keeping an eye on this thread to see what the ID turns out to be.

it could be serpentinite possibly, or even jade...

I'm leaning towards good jade. The fibrous nature looks right, jade is heavy, and dark inclusions of magnetite or manganese are not uncommon in jade.....Mel

I'd call it nephrite cause of the fibrous nature and jadiness with inclusions.

Just my 2 cents, if it scratches quartz, the color of it along with that lil purple blotch in pic 3 is leading me towards either beryl or corundum from North Carolina.....................

Looks like jadeite. 1.5 cents worth.

I have feeling to agree with elegantcabs. The reddish spot and look of the stone reminds me of Ruby in Zoisite. Ruby in zoisite usually runs about 6.5 to 7 on the hardnes scale (pure ruby is 9) and quartz is right at 7. So that kinda throws it off a bit.
Jade is usually around 6.5 in hardness so it wouldn't scratch Quartz.
There is also Ruby in Fuchsite - however Fuchsite is very soft.
Pretty stone you have!

On the quartz, not clear, did it scratch quartz or did it leave material on quartz?

OK, were did you find it? Not exact but regionally? And when you say you polished it, did you sand it too? If so, comparable it should cut and sand not so easily if corundum, which I would leave to first because of its size, and that it really scratched the quartz. Do you have any corundum? and if so, will it scratch that?

it was found from Sorong Valley, Papua Indonesia. I tried it on corrundum, but it did not scratch corrundum as it did on crystal. very faint.
