here are the dalmation stones at the end of stage 2. in the process of my washing and feeling all my stones and moving them to a new barrel, my husband was getting quite interested in them too. my husband followed me when i went to put the barrel on to tumble. now remember i said i've been bringing my tumblers and supplies in AFTER he goes to bed. he looked around the room and asked if this was what my 5 y/o child got for christmas. i pointed to the corner at the little red plastic toy still rolling and said no that's what she got for christmas then died out laughing. he looked back at the big tumblers and said "well that little thing isn't worth a ". now he wants to know how big can you go. it's going to be a family addiction! i'm going to have to get some more of these. i really like them! kim

WOW, those are cool stones! I really like them, great look. It would make a neat display to have a bowl of those mixed half and half with Snowflake obsidian, whick looks like a negative of those rocks. It would be a good conversation piece and drive people bezerk (my other hobby ;D ) Great job again Kim! I wonder if a rock dealer would think I was crazy to call and order 101 dalmation stones? Worth a try, later, Don
Tumbling update, I just put a batch of mixed rock mostly Mook jasper into final polish. There are some real beauties in this batch, I can't wait to see how they finish up. I'll post pics when finished.

The medical profession is soon going to have to list rocks as contagious, you never know who is going to be infected next. Post some pictures when you get the dalmation stones done looking good so far btw where did you find them?

i got the dalmation stones at the rockshed.
wiz - after step 1 the 6# barrel was only about 1/2 full so yes i've got pellets in for filler.
the electricity went off for over an hr for no reason i could see and caused me some stress but everything is rolling again and seems fine.

Neat stones!
I have a batch in coarse now that looks a whole lot like those, but the gal at the rock shop told me they are feldspar.
Of course, knowing little to nothing about rocks feldspar and dalmation stones could be the same thing. They sure look alike.
What ever mine is, I found them along the railroad track. Thousands and thousands of them! I filled a bookbag up with as many as I could carry and when I run out of them, I'll go back for some more.

Contagious and addictive! If it gets too bad, they'll have to set up one of those 12 step programs for rock addicts.

The track I found the rocks on is no longer in use and there's a neat red caboose parked on it. It's part of some historical railroad stop or something. I glanced at the sign, took pics of the caboose and then went to pickin' up rocks! LOL!
The caboose was a perfect picture for a photo project that I have to do for the photo course I am taking. Although I haven't cracked a book on that since I got my first tumbler! Probably a good thing I have 2 and a half more years to finish the course!

i'm pretty sure i read somewhere dalamation stone is a feldspar. i'm seriously envious if you can walk around and pick them up! i'm in mississippi and you could walk this whole state and not pick up squat! look on this and you'll see we have no state gemstone or mineral and petrified wood is our state rock/stone. www.stategeologists.org/gems.htmlgo pick you up some and sell 'em on e-bay! kim

i went to look and i'm finding it referred to as a jasper but in one place it said and i'm quoting "dalmation stone is a quartz/tourmaline trachtyte which includes poikolitic tourmaline (tourmaline of volcanic origin)". so of those 2 choices i'm gonna say jasper that's alot easier ;D.

I thought about doing that, but first I would want to take one into the rock shop and have them tell me exactly what it is. Would hate to sell "dalmation stones" and then find out from some unhappy buyer that they are not dalmation stones at all!
I don't really care if they are dalmation stones or not as long as they are pretty when they are finished.
