Ok, don't think I've posted this little guy in here. No one really knows anything about this. Everyone agrees, even a few experts of artifacts, he was dug up from somewhere. This is actually a whistle, not sure if it was meant to be but it does work. We have not cleaned him up, but he was in the ground at some point, this is for sure. I actually found him wrapped in very old silk cloth. He was from an estate sale, we were digging through some fabrics and patterns in a box from the 40s. Found this box that had him wrapped inside the silk. The silk fell apart.........it literally disintegrated.

Very cool.
It looks Mexican to me---Mayan, Aztec, or Olmec, but I'm no expert.
I would _not_ clean it up.

I'm not going to clean it. We thought about it, but the more I kept looking at it, thought, nope, not going to risk it at all. It just stays wrapped in a box for now. I've had several people say Mexico. Thanks for looking at it.

friend,i have seen hundreds of different types here in mexico, but yours is of a different culture,,,,yours is from guatemala,,,of course you may also find in honduras, because the best mayan works are found in honduras and guatemala, you can drive east in guatemala and cross the border into honduras, all right there in the heart of mayan culture, also in that area of guatemala where you find the jade and the areas where they worked it with garnet,, ab

Wow......that is pretty cool if you're right on that. We've shown it to so many people and everyone says........Mexico, thats about it. I tried to do as much research as I could on it and figured the Mayan part, but honestly couldn't get much past that. He's in such good shape. I haven't decided whether to put him in the glass cabinet or just keep him wrapped up in a box.

Very neat. Definitely pre-colombian, but without even a country from which to place it it will probably be hard for anyone but an expert to ID it. The iconography could fit in with most cultures from Mexico basically thru southern Bolivia. Ceramic whistles are not infrequent here in the Americas - I have one in the shape of a fox from coastal Peru. The fact that is doesnt appear to be fired or burnished could provide clues. Is black color on is back from some sort of pigment?
What a great garage sale find! he deserves to be in a case!

Wow, what a great find. My vote is for the glass cabinet. Daniel

I'd have it looked at by an expert in Mayan and Aztec artifacts, and an appraisal of the value. Little objects like that, in that good of condition, may be worth storing in a safe deposit box. Don

New to this site and love fossils and artifacts , I would strongly suggest you send lots of pictures with a ruler along side to have an ID .If it is rare, super rare or someone just thinks it would look good in a case ITS GONE and you have nothing but raging anger. good luck. nice find. aaeonfluxx

P.S. I just thought of something else this whistle could have been used for hunting bats , imitating their call just as predator hunters use calls today . But that’s just my opinion I could be wrong. aaeonfluxx
