here are a few specimans that were instrumental in getting me into the lapidary hobby these were given to my daughters from an owner of a daylilie nursery . which in turn help my 5 yr old (at the time ) to want a rock tumbler . now i have 6 . and my girls like the finished shiney rocks. this was given to me by my Dad a few years before he passed away . i don't know where he got it or exactly what it is ... i am not certain if it is Odsidian or glass slag . i have no interest in changing it just keeping as a gift from my Dad. thanks for looking ! --paul

Nice specimens, Paul. I don't think that one from your Dad is glass or obsidian. It sure looks like a type of agate or petrified wood to me. It is great you have a rock to remember your Dad. Before my Dad died he gave me some dogtooth calcite he had collected almost 50 years ago. I think of him every time I see one of those pieces of calcite.

Awesome, heartwarming story. What a special piece from your Dad too. It's a great keepsake.

Beautiful crystals and that piece from your Dad is extraordinary! Beautiful colors in it and I agree, I don't think it is slag although it could be by the look of the rounded fracture on the top of it. I would guess agate though. Fran

From the colour, and fracture, I would say slag glass. Obsidian of that colour is said to exist in Russia, but all the specimens that have been tested by GIA turned out to be glass. If it is obsidian, you have a great treasure. Woody

I'd also say slag glass, but a very nice piece at that! It reminds me of a piece I had as a kid.
The crystals are nice, too.

Nice crystals!
I was 5 years old when I picked up and took home my first "rock". It was a piece of blue slag I found in the Smokey Mt Nat Park. ;D I carried it around with me for years but somewhere along the way it became lost.
