Yep, the fire band only reflects when the light is 90 degrees, give or take a few. That's my frustration with many of the reflective/chatoyant stones. It's very difficult to put a good case together for the viewer...

Wow, fantastic. Looks like an obsidian/fire agate hybrid.

WOW! Very eye-catching! As beautiful as opal. Is the edge of the cab very thick, or do the pics trick me?

Wow! That's freaking awesome! I'm guessing by looking at the photo's that the "eye" in the cab is not a reflection but the color in the stone. Beautiful work and material Tim

Fire obsidian is one of my most favourite materials, and this cab is really nice. This is sort of stone that one can play with in the light for a long time..yea, I know small things amuse small minds (me), but I can play with a piece of fire for a very long time. for those of that do not know, fire obsidian only comes from one plae, and that is Glass Buttes, Oregon. Slabs sell for $5.00 a carot. Woody

Dan that is the most fabulous piece I have ever seen of that material, your friend must have some really good stuff, or else previous cabs I saw were not oriented properly. Obsidian is always so tough to orient whether rainbow, sheens, royal velvet, etc. Amber

Adrian: This cab is quite thick. I think about 4-5 mm.

Thank you Dan, I thought it's much thicker, such as half an inch or such.

Do you polish it like regular obsidian? Or is more like opals with layers of fire? Whats the best polishing compound to use to get it smooth like that?

Bodylogic, you polish just like any othe obsidian, but when you grind, you MUST leave material above the very thin layer od fire. Should you grind into the fire, it will be gone forever. The fire layer is very very thin. For some reason, you can see the fire better under incandescent light than you can in sunlight, especially bright sunlight. Woody
