I am building a two station cabbing unit out of an old Delta variable speed grinder. The arbor has 1/2 inch coarse threads and I am looking for an adapter that will convert to 20 T.P.I. so I can use end laps (without the holes). I have found plenty of adapters but they either adapt up or down in size or from a smooth shaft to 1/2 inch 20. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I'm thinking you may need the shaft machined, then have material added, then recut the threads.
Good luck with the build!

Thanks for the suggestion Nate. After looking over the shaft I have decided that if I cannot find some kind of threaded coupler adapter, the easiest solution might be to cut off the coarse threaded portion of the shaft. I believe that will leave me enough shaft to grip with one of the typical shaft adapters. I am not sure though since I don't have one of those adapters. If anyone who has one could measure it for me and tell me how much smooth shaft I will need I would be grateful.

You could probably mount them right on the threaded surface. The threads won't be much good after tightening set screws. You may need to file a flat surface for set screw also. You would need a left hand thread for left side of arbor.

That is an idea worth considering John. I could fill in between the threads with something like JB Weld and sand it down. At worst I am back to cutting off the threaded portions.
I really like the idea that I am going to have variable speed and a half horse of power to play with, with this grinder. I will post pictures when I get it done.

Are you talking about something like this? It came with the used Genie I bought. it goes on the left side and holds the three wheels on the shaft. I can use flat laps and polishing pads with it. i looked at the Diamond Pacific catalog and I don't see one. I do not know what it's called either. Geoff

Yeah. I don't know the thread count of the existing arbor threads but I do know they are coarse. Grinder was made by Delta.

Thanks a lot Kev, that is very generous. I will know in a few days when my parts arrive if I need to go that route.

I received a smooth shaft to RH-20 1/2 inch adapter today from Covington and while it is long enough to get a good grip on the smooth part of the shaft I am beginning to wonder if I even need to worry about holeless disks and backing pads at all. Are they really all that much of an advantage? Well, either way it looks like I am covered. Hope to be up and cabbing before the end of next week.

No hole discs are great for flat work and cab backs. Discs with center holes would work on smaller pieces only. Polish pads are really nice to have full face.

You have the adapter, slide that bad boy over the threads and tighten the set screws. Next order a flat disc with RH 1/2" #20 threads. No holes to worry about. I ordered a 8"from The Rock Shop.

Yeah, sounds like I have some options now and the no hole disks obviously give a larger work surface for flat work.
