Does anyone have any stainless steel jewelers mix shot they want to get rid of? Was pricing it and found it for about $45 for 2 pounds. Need it for the silver PMC work I am doing, if anyone has some to sell let me know. Thanks

wouldn't stainless steel shot for reloading shotgun shells work for that too? I think it would be a whole lot cheaper by the pound, I used stuff from my hubbies reloading and when I was done I dried it and gave it back to him.

The Rockshed sells stainless steel shot--perhaps they would know if it would work for you.

Thanks girls I will check the rock shed, the jewelers mix is just tiny pieces of various sizes to get into all the surfaces, not sure what shot gun shot is, but I think it might be uniform in size.

I see 1lb for $25 everywhere, so two for $45 sounds good.

Amber,
"Regular" stainless steel shot does not work as well as the jewelers type. The pins, balls and cones of the jeweler's type gets into the crevices and other small areas of your pieces much better.
The stuff works amazingly well and Im not sure how anyone can wire wrap without it. Wraps come out brilliantly shiny, smooth and deburred. Ive even tumbled fragile boulder opal wrapped in 14kt gold with no ill effects. Its pricey but very worth it. Consider it an investment.......being stainless means there's really no maintenance. I just rinse mine off on occasion and always tumble them in the vibe with a squirt of Dawn dishsoap.
Try etsy and ebay........Im sure one or the other has some and it may be less expensive.

OK Shannon I ordered 2 pounds for $31 at Santa Fe Jewelry Supply, they actually have PMC stuff too. So can I put wire wraps with stones in this to tumble as well? How long do you let it tumble? DO you just cover and use a squirt of Dawn? Can you put gold filled wire in as well or only silver?

Amber,
I use my ss shot for gold, silver, stainless steel, copper, brass etc. The only thing I dont use it with is aluminum. I "heard" that the aluminum doesnt do well with the steel shot. Ive also used dry rice and walnut shell for tumbling certain metals.......learned most of that from the chain mailing forums. But you wouldnt want to add water or Dawn when using rice or walnut shell lol.
For hard materials such as stainless steel, I will let it run for a full day or longer. For soft materials such as gold and soft stones, I put them in and tumble for 30 minutes-an hour, check that there is no damage, run another 30 minutes etc.
I actually have my stainless steel jeweler's shot mixed with plastic pellets but i wouldnt do that again. The pellets are a pain. I add just a teeny squirt of water and also a squirt of dawn. After tumbling, you will notice that there is "black" junk all over everything. This is when I will rinse the shot and squirt new water and dawn in.

I read some where that you don't use the same steel for ss and gold, you need two batches and keep them separate and labeled. Is this true? Donna

Amber, Sorry I might be late with a comment (as I only get up here every now and again). The stuff from the rockshed works fine for PMC. I've used it on a few pieces I've done with know problems.
