My youngest son Scott just got back from a week in the Dominican Republic. There he visited the Dominican Amber Museum www.ambermuseum.com/ and brought me back a present. It's an Amber cab with ancient water bubbles trapped inside! Can't wait to wrap it! He said it cost $20 USD there. Here is a pic of Scott at my kitchen table this morning studying for the MCATs. Scott told us that upon arrival at their hotel, as he and his friends went out to see the pool area, they spotted a 9 year old child drowning in the pool. Scott and one of the members of the hotel staff jumped in and pulled the child out. Scott spent a number of years as a lifeguard during high school and as an orderly and now a lab tech at a hospital. He immediately administered CPR. No pulse and she had gum blocking her airway. He had to fight with the hotel staff member to keep the child still to work on her as the staffmember wanted to take her to a medical center. A nurse, also a guest, came over and gave Scott backup and in minutes the child's arms and legs began to move and she rolled over and spurted out massive amounts of fluids and then began to cry. Scott noticed a contusion on her forehead. The child's family had gone to their room to take a nap and apparently left the child unattended. There was apparently no lifeguard. The hotel staff downplayed the incident. Scott and his friends saw the girl walking around with her family a couple of days later as if nothing had happened.

That's a great present Scott gave you, Jo, but an even better present he gave that little girl. Too bad some parents have to be so irresponsible. Please thank Scott from a caring parent, as I assume that little girl's parents probably never talked to him.

Thanks Nate and Paul! I told him to take this as a sign that he is supposed to practice medicine and that this will dispel any doubts he may have as he takes the MCATs. Scott has performed CPR many times in the hospital and he would prepare himself for it when he walked into the hospital to start a shift. But he explained that this experience out of the hospital setting really left an impact on him. He didn't seem to be bothered by the lack of thanks from the girl and her family. The way he explained it, there was a language barrier as they were not Americans, and the hotel downplayed the incident for the family, so they may not have ever really known what happened, they showed up at the very end after it was all over. I do think he felt alot better seeing the little girl walk around normally. He did make some fast friends there who were Americans. The nurse who worked on her with him and a couple in their early thirties who also were there supporting him. They all went to dinner together every night for the rest of the trip and Scott just emailed the nurse today.

What a special son you have! To bring you such a special present and to act so brave and save a child's life! You must be very proud of him.

WOW, that is the problem with the islands, no lifeguards and at these all inclusives the parents just seem to let their kids run wild. Thank goodness he was there to save her, way to go. Nice amber! Amber

I love that amber and your son is a hero! I know they tend to take these things for granted but just think if he wasn't there, a family would be planning a funeral right now instead of enjoying a trip. Kudos to Scott, his friends and the other nurse! Tell him it is time to hit the books hard now! Fran

Thanks to each and every one of you for your comments. I've sent Scott a link to this thread so he can read what you wrote to him. Jo
