My son was startled by a snake on our screened porch. He scared it and it went under the screen at an edge and went out into the grass. After he looked it up on the internet to make sure it wasn't poisonous, he grabbed the camera and took some pictures. He thought it was a ribbon snake but it is a garden snake. about 2 1/2 feet long I think the next project needs to be replacing the screen on the patio...I would have been screaming my head off if I were home and stepped out to find this! Hey, Fran, a garden (or, "garter") snake that size, this time of year, is likely a female with a bunch of little ones slithering around inside! She'll eat a bunch of frogs and toads and crickets and other yummy things from your yard if she survives. I used to catch a few and keep them for a while as pets when I was younger. They are generally non-aggressive, and they have sorta crummy eyesight. You can get real close to them if you step lightly and slowly so they don't feel you through ground vibrations. Neato!

Awesome little snake which is completely harmless ...Even if it did bite you it would not hurt at all .. and like tk says they are not an aggressive snake in nature...They just want to be left alone like you or me would ...

Yep, that's a ribbon snake. A ribbon snake actually is a garter snake with less patterns. You can usually pick them up if you're fast enough without getting bit. Like Greg said, it doesn't hurt.

Ewwww, don't like snakes, even if they are not poisonous. Must be that Eve - snake thing...lol. Those are good pictures of it though. I wouldn't be screaming my head off but I would be grabbing a shovel instead of a camera.
