Here are a few odds and ends that I found interesting.
The first photo is actually the second rock that I picked up in 2010. I stopped on the beach at Partridge Island to take a picture and felt this through my hiking boot. At first, it appeared to be a wave damaged chunk of zeolite. When I flipped it over, I was pleasantly surprised. The crystal points are sharp and there is a faint blush of Citrine and Amethyst to it. You know what they say about the grass on the other side.
I found a few articles on the Internet about the quartz balls reported to be found at McKay Head, so I kept my eye out on my last hunt. A perfect specimen would have crystal points radiating outward from the ball, but the tidal action makes short measure of their life expectancy. This piece is pretty rounded.
I found a second quartz ball that was more intact and had to cut it to take a peak. Not every find is a winner. No hollow centre or crystal points, but it does have some faint blushes of rose and violet. Future pendants here.
I found another small piece of amethyst. The colour is faint, but it is still worth of a place on my shelf of “keepers”.
The last three photos are something I have never seen before. On the beach, I though I had found a few pieces from a thin jasper seam. Upon cutting, I noticed the lead grey metallic banding and ran for my horseshoe magnet. The metallic banding is reasonably magnetic. Not enough to pick the slab up, but enough to raise a corner. My guess is hematite in jasper, but have never seen anything like that before. Any ideas?
Hope you enjoy the photos.
Darryl.
