I've been on the site for a few days, and decided it was time to tell you about me. At 68 years old, I'm hardly new to the rock hounding and lapidary hobbies. I've been bringing home "pretty rocks" since about the age of 6. When I reached junior high school, I found that they had a rock club and complete lapidary work shop. I've been hooked ever since. I grew up in southern California, and spent as much time as possible exploring and collecting in and around the deserts. I'm now living in South Dakota, and will soon be going out to the Black Hills and Buffalo Gap National Grasslands to meet up with a group of rock hounds, and search for Fairburn and Tee Pee Canyon agates and anything else interesting. I have a fairly complete lapidary shop. Lacking only a large sphere machine, which I hope to purchase before the year is out. I'm in the learning stages of wire wrapping, and have gained a lot of useful information from this site. I've always believed that a day spent without learning something new, was a wasted day. Don

Thanks for the welcome guys. Just got a heavy box in the mail. Three beautiful chunks of Biggs jasper. A buddy of mine is a heavy haul trucker, and a rockhound. He's delivering wind towers to a place just outside of Biggs, Oregon. Between loads, he hunts rocks, and seems to have hit the mother load just outside Biggs. Some of the most beautiful picture jasper I've seen in years. He'll be hauling a couple of tons home to Montana next month. Time to get to cutting. Don

I love working with picture jasper. Almost as much as I love working with Woodward Ranch red plume agate. I'm down to my last 2 slices of that. Always wondered about the Woodward Ranch, since my last name is Woodward. I guess I should be so lucky as to be related to them. Don

Hey Mark, digging in my rock shed yesterday I came up with a 5 pound chunk of old stock Bruneau jasper. I'll slab some Biggs today, and weather permitting I'll start on the Bruneau tomorrow. Have to resharpen my blade first. I'll slice up a really pretty piece of gold sheen obsidian to do that. Don

Jo, just as soon as I figure out how to post pics on here, I'll be posting them. Spent the day slabbing a nice chunk of gold sheen obsidian. Beautiful material. Tomorrow, weather permitting, I'll be cutting Biggs picture jasper. Don

Hi Don, Welcome! It sounds like you've got the bug pretty bad.

Actually, I've had the lapidary bug since the early 1950's. But I'm just starting to teach myself wire wrapping. I'm an old retired metal smith, so bending wire shouldn't be that hard for me to learn. Don
