Mel, Scot and I are taking a long weekend trip to Winnemucca and we scheduled a one day rock trip in McDermitt with a friend of ours Joe White Buffalo who owns the rock shop in McDermitt.
We did get a few pictures today, not as many as we should have, but enough so that I am not ashamed to post something.
Here is a shot of the snow capped mountains on the way up there.
Ok thats all the pictures we got.
Thanks for lookin..............Tony
Ok I am just kidding.
Joe took us up towards Disaster Peak, our first stop was Crystal Valley, where there are huge boulders of massive crystal structures. Joe wanted to take one home he had spotted a few weeks ago, but someone had found it between the time Joe found it and the time we got there to haul it out and they had knocked all the big crystals off of it with a hammer. So we had to pick out some other pieces to take home.
Here is the one I picked out, we had to roll it up an embankment and then dig a hole for the tires to go into so we could back up to it and roll it into the back of the pickup.
Each of us picked out one of these cool crystal rocks to take home. They are basically pretty yard rocks, but they are sure cool! Here is a shot of the pickup bed from the first stop.
Scot looking for a pretty rock to take home
This is Joe White Buffalo, if you are ever in McDermitt stop by his rock shop and say HI.
This is Joe's house if you make it to McDermitt
Mel putting stuff away after we drug one of the pieces up the hill
On the way out we stopped by an old mercury mine, lots of open airshafts and tunnels running all through the host rock.
Here you can see where the cinnabar vein was and they only took the vein out and left the host rock
Some of the guys in the shot for size comparison
3 tunnels come together here and lots of loose material. I found some material here that looks identical to Sci-Fi jasper from Mexico.
For some reason no one took any pictures after noon, as we were busy running around like rockhounds and yelling "oooooh look at this one!"
We got a few more pounds in the truck and made it back to town about 6pm.
We had so much fun we kept our motel room for another night and we are going to go back out again tomorrow.
I think we may have broken my FIL Mel
Hope he recooperates by tomorrow morning!
Hope to have another batch of pictures for you tomorrow.
Thanks for looking.............Tony
