Howdy folks, Was out in the yard poisoning fire ant mounds yesterday when I stumbled across this little fellow. I was pretty excited because, though I've been trying to improve snake habitat in the yard, snake sightings are still pretty rare. We just have too darn much livestock and too few food items to attract many snakes. Anyway, just a couple of pics. This is an Eastern Black Necked Gartersnake which is kind of restricted to the Texas Hill Country region. This fellow had gotten real lucky because he carried the scars of a recent attack by a hawk....Mel

Never thought of posting pics of the critters crawling around my yard. We have thousands of the garter snakes native to the northern plains. Lots of salamanders, and the occasional painted turtle. Love having them around. They help keeping the larger bugs down, and the garter snakes do a pretty good job on baby field mice too. Don

We have a lot of them too but that one seems more colorful than the ones we have.

Mel, now that you got it all worked out to attract them, you can tell them to tell their friends that you have a good snake haven around your place.... since you like them and all... (Eeeeewwwww) Sorry... Jo

Pretty colors in that snake although I must say I would not be trying to improve habitat for snakes, don't really care for them even if they do keep bugs and rodents down.

The male garter snakes around here are nice enough to put out an awful smelling musk when disturbed. It's nice to see them patrolling the yard though.

Great snake! I take it this fellow is not as aggressive as the garter snakes I entertained in Virginia--or else you've just got a special touch.

Susan: Nope, this guy was stinky as all Gartersnakes are, but not aggressive. I've found most snakes in this group with the exception of the Giant Gartersnakes in California's upper central valley, tend to be mild mannered if handled gently. My wife held this one for the closeup pic and he was just content to cuddle....Mel

thats an awesome garter ... thanks for the pic ... I would also being trying to add more wild snakes in m yard ..You are not alone .. I will say I like how this one has a really big head displacement for a garter ... change the pattern and colors and you might think it had fangs ... Greg
