I finally got some more wire in. I am still having trouble making those large smooth flowing loops like I see others make. I will practice more. I am sure that eventually I will get it. This is a 7 carat Australian Opal. The wrap ended up being about 1 3/4" x 5/8" at its widest points. Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

That is a really lovely cab and awesome wrap. 5/8 wide? good gracious I'd be cross eyed for a month trying to wrap lol! The only tip I have with wire is dead soft for me. I have half hard sterling wire now - I am not that talented a wire artist- and the half hard is difficult for me to get where I want it to go looks wise.

Beautiful cab and wrap! I'm a fan of less wire is more on stones that shout out with their beauty like this one does

I think you did that stone a really good deed with the wrap - it is a good, minimalist wrap that showcases the awesome opal and doesn't get in the way of it.
It looks like you're using round wire for both the wrap and the bindings. Most folks here prefer to use square wire (dead soft) for the wrap, and 1/2-round wire (half-hard) for the bindings. I don't know if that would help you making the larger rounded swirls, but I find that, for me, it makes it easier.

I actually used 24ga soft square wire from IJSC for the frame and 21ga 1/2 half hard half round for the bindings. I could not find "dead soft" in 24ga only "soft" I do not know for sure if this is different. To be honest with you I could not tell a hole lot of difference between the soft and half hard in the 24ga.

I'm just going to repeat what others have said but it's worth repeating. The wrap is perfect for that Opal.

Beautiful. I like the less is more for this cab for sure. If you want ideas on how to do the swirlies check out the tutorial Marie (superioragates) did on swirls. She helped me a lot when I was trying to learn swirls (although I'm still not great at them).
