It's been a while since I've had a chance to go rockhunting, but I went a couple weeks ago with the Houston Gem and Mineral Society to Jasper, TX. They have access to some timber company land that is loaded, and I mean loaded, with petrified wood. To give you an idea, when I got down to the creek I immediately saw a large pile of pet wood (about 3 feet by 6 feet). Is that somebody's pile? I asked. Nope, someone said, that just where it stopped. I saw several similar piles throughout the creek. Unfortunately I forgot to bring the camera. I tried to be a little more choosy, seeking out pieces with good color or graining. Texas pet wood tends toward brown and gray, but you can find some reds and yellows and blacks. I'm hoping these colors are more than surface deep. A lot of it appeared to be fairly fibrous, making me wonder whether it was already rotting or in water when it got covered and the petrification process began. Here's some pix of what I got. The whole shebang. Parts of the pile Check out the graining/fibers Hope to use the existing contours to create pendants of the two on the left Thanks for looking. matt

Great pet wood. I didn't even know there was petrified wood in Texas.

Amazing pieces! I think that timber company allows pet wood collecting to avoid the pieces to reach in their machines and to dammage them Adrian

Great finds Matt! Those examples with the semi-rotted appearance are very cool and unusual....Mel

Love that 4th pic. That's a nice display piece. Hope you don't cut that one up. You should be able to get lots of nice cabs out of the others. Don
