Maddie was hounding one day years ago & stuck her hand in an old rotten log & came up with a bunch of these. Someone who is supposed to know told her they were probably crystallized termites. What do you think? Donnie

if you had one you could slice in half to see the inside maybe you could determine what it is

I'm wondering if they have a salty taste to them............The bug theory doesn't click......Could be salt crystals......... or some other mineral build up from being inside that log........(My opinion of cource)

What kind of log? If it was a persimmon tree or something they could be alum crystals.

Certain insects coat their cocoons with grains of sand when they hibernate. It's a possibility. Don

Never heard of such a thing as crystallized termites. But there is lots I haven't heard of. Looks like some kind of mineral concretion to me. What is she sticking her hand in an old rotten log for anyway? I'd be afraid of getting bitten.

I have been collecting near Clio Alabama for pet wood. Some of the pockets of this wood is crystalized. Some loose pieces look similar to what you have in the photos. Some of these logs have loose sand. It was said that termites may have chewed the orginal wood pockets allowing the petrification process to allow the wood to be replaced by microcystiline quartz and the pockets allowed to form small crystal line walls and some wood to form balls like shapes you have. Some of this wood have small ball shapes similar to yours. Most of the shapes were like small footballs. Everyone started calling these "fairey tears". The fariey cried and her tears turned to stone when the tree died. This may help or "not".
