Here is photo of my second attempt at a Clovis point knapped from Glass Buttes Aurora Borealis. I got the flute on one side to run about 3/4 the length, and about half way on the other side. Woody The other side

Nice work. I've always wanted to learn flint knapping. I have a Native American neighbor who's offered to teach me when he gets a few days off work. Don

Awesome job on that point! I have a devil of a time getting those flutes to run on our gulldanged tough Texas flint. I may be wrong but I think Clovis bases are often ground instead of having the sharply flaked lower edge. I guess this was to prevent the base from cutting the binding wraps....Mel

Mel: You are correct on the ground base. I also have not done a secondary flake pass to clean up, and sharpen the edges. I got this far, I thought I would leave well enough alone. Woody

Woody *S* Yep, I'm the same way. Can't tell you how many points I've broken by going just one flake too far. Sometimes it's just better to quit when you're ahead and the point is looking good.....Mel

Jeff: I am using a jig..........otherwise you would see a lot of broken bit of obsidian. Woody

well if it breaks then go for a Folsom, I had some good sized piece of Knife River somewhere out back. The one thing I like about the obsidian is it show nice flake patterns

Don't know anything about knapping but I'm amazed at how thin you can get the edges. Your finger shows through on the second pic. It looks really sharp.

Lori: A photomicrograph of the broken edge of obsidian is a straight line. A surgical steel scalpel blade at the same magnification looks more like a saw blade. Woody
