Just by way of interest- If you go to facetit.com (I think someone was out to lunch when they came up with that domain name!) They have some beautiful dark, and rich colored rough rubies, sapphires etc. The point I want to make is that they are using a millimeter ruler. So if you are thinking inches, and they are showing millimeters you may end up like, shorty, with a bag of rice, and wonder what you just paid for?

Most rough, when it is measured with length, is done in millimeters. It is more precise and most rough is imported. Watch out, when purchasing semiprecious rough by the carat. That is when the rip occurs. When a vendor starts with the carat weight, stop him, ask how much per piece. He knows, he is trying to get some extra. Go back just before closing and see if he wants to sell some.\ A trick of the trade.
