I have a question. Is saganite a specific mineral or is any agate with needle like sprays of another mineral showing called saganite? Rutile resembles saganites at times but is titanium oxide. Rutilated describes quartz with rutile needles in it. How about saganite? Help.

Carlos: I'd say a generic term for acicular crystals included in or replaced by agate. However, sometimes the mineral type is used instead as in Trent Sagenite often is called reaglar in agate or stibnite in agate. For this one I prefer sagenite as it seems unclear what the mineral is. Most sagenite is acicular crystals of aragonite, calcite or goethite or some such. Think the term is best used as a generic for any needle-like crystals in chalcedony and then we let the real geologists figure out just what mineral made the crystals.....Mel

Thanks Mel, and I see I had the spelling wrong.

I think it is generally a generic term describing the needle like crystals Mel mentioned in a fan shaped pattern.
