i know in all this wealth of info i have read that you need to burp the barrel when tumbling jasper or petrified wood to release the gas but i can't find anything about it now that i threw some jasper in one of my loads. i thought i remembered reading to burp it daily. but now that i'm really paying attention i'm wondering if that means daily for the whole time or just in stage 1. does someone know? how long do you burp the barrel?

Hi Kim, I normally would burp every day till the load is done. Maybe overkill, but when I see the barrel bulge, I'd rather be safe than cleaning up a big mess.

You're right, I really don't burp in the polish stage, but I do check the rocks every other day just to monitor their progress. Since polishing is removing such a small amount of material, there should be very little if any gas released.

thanks michiganrocks!
when i burped them last night i peeked in and i had originally thought i might stay away from jaspers for awhile but they are breathtakingly beautiful after only 1 day. i was putting them in for filler on the unakites since they were the same hardness. this hobby is just amazing! it would be hard to pick a favorite rock at this stage (maybe ever).
