I found this awhile back, but did not ever have the time to get it ID'd by the rock shop in Princeton until now. I THOUGHT when I picked it up that's what it was, but then thought eh...maybe, I'll take it anyways....glad I did. Rock weighs 6.75 lbs Found in the "back yard" - Central, MN Id'd in Princeton,MN as Binghamite/Silkstone Thanks for lookin'!! Marie

The top photo does look a little like silkstone. The other 2, not as much. Is it chatoyant? That's pretty much a requirement, along with traces of hematite and white quartz. Binghamite tends to be less wavy and have red jasper, along with the hematite and quartz. Val generally knows what he's talking about, though, so I would trust his judgment.
The only silkstone and Binghamite sources I know of are the old shaft mines around Cayuna and Crosby.

I live not too far from Crosby, and he was immediate in his ID, and no 2nd judging himself, he picked it up, told me "very nice peice of Binghamite" and set it on the table, when we put the rocks back in the bucket I had him look at, he said it again, because I asked again to make sure. My photography skills may not be the best, remember...I can for some reason take a photo of a pendant, but gimme a rough rock, and forget it! LOL Not sure why tho. This is the reason I did not show it off b-4, I wanted him to look at it in person, and tell me for sure what it was b-4 I posted it here....Lord knows I make a fool of myself enuff! hahaha...specially when it comes to rock ID's! LOL

Nice find Marie! I knew you were in the right zone to maybe have a shot at finding some. Did he value it for you?

No he didn't....hmmm...I forgot to ask him too...I'll call him today and ask him. He had some other biz he needed to tend to, and I was too excited to even think about anything! hahahaha This is the rock I was tellin you about Steve, just couldn't seem to get it down to him to ID b-4 I left this summer...

Yes, I could be fooled by the photos. Congrats! I _love_ Binghamite. How big is the piece?
One more thought: if you decide to cut it (I would), do it when your oil is already dirty. It will turn your oil red and create a lot of snot. If you're just using water, then it doesn't matter.

Yeah...I don't wanna be the one to cut it, too big for the workforce saw I have, and umm...I don't wanna screw it up any, so I listed it on Etsy, for too high a price probably, but just have not made up my mind that I REALLY wanna sell it, or do anything with it, so......If it sells, it sells...if it don't, I will put it up on the shelf for awhile...till I can get a bigger saw. hahaha The rock weighs 6.75 pounds, but have not taken measurements of it yet, too big for the workforce to cut, for sure tho, would probably need at least a 10 inch saw for it
