Is this some kind of conglomerate, an orbicular agate, or what? Or maybe some kind of fossil bugs? Is it a generic agate, or is there a "location" name to it? I have no idea where this came from, but I would have gotten it via eBay or from an RTH'er. Thanks, Tom

With the dark eyes in the center of some of the spots, it looks like Oolite would be a possibility. Or possibly some sort of fossil sea life. What is the hardness ? Can you scratch it with a knife or file ?

Won't scratch with knife or nail. Seems very hard, and when tapped, it has a ring to it that sounds like glass. It's very solid, and totally opaque. Each of these slabs is about 6" X 1.5-2".

I just found an eBay listing for "petrified algae" that resembles these slabs. I think the reddish to maroon coloration is unusual, though.
Thanks,
Tom

Hi Tom, that is petrified palm root, either from Texas or California. Very nice pieces!

Petrified algae is another possibility. I have some slabs in the basement. I'll take a look. As I remember, mine are colored about the same. Don

Yes, my slab looks a whole lot like the 4th one down in Mel's treatise. OK, I'll go with palm!
Thanks,
Tom

I'd guess either some type of stromatolite or petrified palm....
