Hi, everyone!
Glad to "see" you again, after a two weeks break. We were in vacation and forgot the laptop home, so no internet connection. Besides, because of all the wi-fi areas there were no more internet bars in the area.
Well, anyway, here we are back home, with pictures. For those of you who are not very new on the board, you might recognize some places, as we were in the same place as in 2007 and 2008. For the newer ones, Lesvos island is a rather big Greek island in Eastern Aegeean Sea. What makes it more special compared to other islands is the petrified forest which lies in its western side.
OK, here are some pictures.
Firstly, we arrived in Kavala, the harbor where we had to take the ferry. Here we met Yorgos:
There was a short encounter, but such pleasant and interesting. Folks, Yorgos is a very pleasant person and besides he is a very experimented geologist with whom is a pleasure to talk to and to learn from about rocks.
Thank you again Yorgos for the effort of traveling to meet us not only at our arrival, but also on our way back home. It was a pleasure to meet you and I hope we will meet again. Please send our best regards and health wishes to your lovely wife.
We had lunch together and then our ship arrived in the harbor:
I like the rush which occurs every time such a big ship comes to the shore:
Not an easy job to throw that rope right on target:
Well, the trip went fine, the sea was calm we arrived the next morning in Mytilini - Lesvos.
Here is the beach where we stayed:
Here are some pictures of a monastery, old houses and narrow streets, taken in our trip across the island:
An ancient Greek mosaic:
And an ancient Roman aqueduct:
Well, you bet that the main attraction was the petrified forest park; even if we visited it in the years before, this place has its charm:
This petrified forest park lies on some hills which basin a small river which is dry in the summer time. I always wandered if there is a way to the beach close to the place where that river goes to the sea. This year I found that way. What's interesting is that there's no spill in the sea during summer-time. Not directly, at least, because there's a 20 meters sand bar between the river and the sea.
This one is not pet wood, it's a recent tree...
... but all these are small pet woods, from that beach:
All in all, there was a wonderful vacation. We would like to visit again, there's certainly a solid anchor which bonds us to that place.
Thank you for looking,
Adrian
