Hi everyone, These days there still was nice weather here, so a friend of mine and me decided to take advantage of it and do some rockhounding. We went in the vicinity of Danube river, to search flint nodules. The place is a limestone wall, where also fossils could be found. However, our target were not the fossils... ... but the flint nodules found in horizontal layers (my friend is pointing such a layer): You can see the flint nodules better here: They are very hard and crack-less, take a good polish and some of them have cool patterns, like this one: We also found a cool turtle there: Firstly, a bit shy... ...but more friendly then: Thank you for looking, Adrian

Oh Adrian! That looks like a great trip but it looks like you don't have much ledge to stand on when getting the nodules out. I just love flint because of that beautiful shine you can get! That is an awesome turtle! We have been rescuing them out of the street lately. I have no idea why they head for the road. We pick them up and carry them away from the road in that vicinity. Hopefully they stay away.

Suddenly I have the urge to ask how many licks it takes to get to the center of a tootsie pop! Awesome flint Adrian, and what a cool adventure! Jo

Wow, that cliff would be a bit intimidating to stand on and chop at flint. It is beautiful scenery there. That is part of the reward when collecting. I believe the turtles gravitate to the road to keep warm. That is what I have been told by my Grandfather many years ago. Tanya

I've been doing this with some of them too, I also noticed they enjoy the roads. Like Tanya says, they might look for heat on the black asphalt. For them it's just a rock, a plain one on which they can walk easily. Jo, I had to google to figure out what are you talking about, LOL. Well, those nodules are surely not made to be bitten, except by the grinding wheels of course But once polished, they look like licked Adrian

... Man the Danube's one mighty river huh? ... Brian, Danube is a very big river, the seccond one in Europe (the first one being Volga). It carries a lot of water, some 6000 cubic meters per second, that would be about 212000 cubic feet/sec. But during flood season, like this early summer, this discharge may get doubled. Adrian

Cool pics Adrian. That flint is a dead ringer for some of our local root beer flint. Love that tortoise too!.....Mel
