Does anyone know if Red Jasper can have an almost sandstone or clayish consistency. I have some, or it is supposed to be Red Jasper. I can scratch it pretty easily with my dremel chuck wrench. I was mostly wondering if I would be able to put a polish on it.

If it's that soft, it sure doesn't sound like jasper to me. Is it that soft all over, or just in spots ?

Jasper is usually about mohs 7 in hardness and while some examples can be called bricky as they are porous is doesn o not sound like jasper is what you've got. It might be pipestone which is red, soft, and scratches easily with steel tools oe argillite which is a sedimentary rock with similar qualilties but a bit harder......Mel

Thanks. This a sort of a brick like color. It also looks a lot softer than it is too.
