Really beautiful pics. Drove up north of Columbus, OH, yesterday to help a friend move. Wish I'd had my camera and some time to take photos, the trees were really going in color.

***The Smokies get their characteristic foggy overlay from, believe it or not, emissions from all the plantlife****
Now we can't have all these plants emiting stuff like that. I propose a 30% reduction in plants plus a ban on new plant growth. How tha heck are we going to control global warming with all these plants emiting stuff?

NatureNut, I am planing to go there this weekend. I always love going up into the Cades Cove area. Sometimes it takes hours just to drive thru the loop with so many folks there. It is still worth the trip. Thanks for sharing !!!!!!!

Psssst... Hey Frankie- I heard that Santa secretly visits there to see the fall colors so maybe you can corner him about your shiny new truck, backhoe and cabber. Even though the Rangers said that low level trees were at their peak, you can see they had more time to hit peak in some areas. Have a blast! Better to be on your best behavior, to be safe- no honking or hollering at slow drivers now, you never know who could be in that other car.

thanks for the memories. I haven't seen the smokies in fall for over 35 years, when I moved out to the wild and woolly commercial world. I used to go up there from Bham almost every other weekend and remember almost every scene you captured. Of course out here the leaves were done almost a month ago and now we have a winter invasion , tonight 12 degrees , last night 2 inches of snow and tomorrow high of 29 , guess I will have to go out and sit in the hot tub and dream! Thanks or a wonderful mind tickle. My dogs used to adore the Cades Cove area and to hike up Mt Lecont. Just know Angie was happy! DICKY

I do a few things to prep the photos before painting them. Here are the two I'm working on, after I've prepped them. Increased saturation, enhanced color depth, slight increase in photo size, softened focus slightly... Stand them side-by-side to the originals and the differences are very apparent.

I lived just outside the Smokies back in the late 70s, early 80s and spent a lot of time just driving around hunting for little out of the way spots and hiking. So, those pics really stirred my soul. It is so beautiful. Spring is fabulous too, and winter when the mountains are snow capped, summer isn't bad either. It was just a beautiful place to live.
First time I saw a bear was in the park. Just taking a scenic drive and came upon a massive traffic jam. Somebody said it was a bear. I got out of the car to get a little closer look. It was a momma bear with three cubs and they were raiding somebody's car. Apparently whoever the car belonged to had pulled off the road, gotten out to go look at something and left the doors open. It was a kick to watch. Those bears did a job on that car. I felt really bad for the owners, but watching the bears was a ton of fun.

I have the pleasure of driving through the Smokies about once a month. I live just north of Charlotte, NC, and spend a lot of time going up and down the Blue Ridge Parkway, and running down tiny roads on my scooter and my vert, all through the Smokies. Just love it here! I couldn't sleep last night so played with these photos. First is an oil on canvas. Jo, the original is 6" tall x 10.7" wide, so is quite a large file. I'll email you the originals, the one's posted here are much smaller. This one is felt tip over a pencil drawing...
