This is dinosaur bone rough from the western U.S...correct? Thanks. OK, folks, if you scroll down, I have left another post that shows more photos of this material. Thanks for looking!

That's hard to say. If you can take a close-up of the exposed area...it might show cell structure. It looks like it has a possibility for fortification as well. Where did you get it?? Steve

Oh boy, I just realized that somewhere between my camera and getting posted, this photograph lost almost all its detail. It does have cell structure. I will have to find the original photo or take a better one. Sorry about that guys...in a few days I'll be able to get something better up. Locality unknown, it's from an estate.

I don't see any sign of bone. Looks interesting enough to cut. Looks like signs of lace in places. I see places that remind me a little of some of our local palmwood/bogwood materials.

I agree with John. Looks like possibly palm wood, with a heavy desert tarnish on it. In the 3rd and 4th pics there appear to be palm fiber " eyes " showing in places. Should make interesting cabs. Don

Thanks, folks. I was a little afraid to cut it until I had pondered a little. I think hubby is going to make a flat face in a few minutes. Keeping my fingers crossed...I love palmwood but I have never cut any myself.
Update: OK, we've cut some slabs, and it is petrified wood AND it is awesome. I'm going to try to grab and post some pictures tomorrow...great patterns in this material.

Whoot! I'm going to try to post a photo showing detail of one of the slabs now. I'm satisfied that you folks are right. This is some kind of petrified wood. Not the Louisiana palmwood I'm familiar with though. Any ideas on a more specific identification?

No idea what sort of wood that may be, but I see some awfully interesting cabs in there. Don

You may want to research cycad fossils .

Cycad would show a diamond shape pattern on the outside of the piece. Don't think that's cycad.

Cycad would show a diamond shape pattern on the outside of the piece. Don't think that's cycad. Don That is not necessarily true . Lot`s of fossils can be and are so completely replaced by minerals , that the structure is completely obliderated . This piece , whatever it is , is showing a high degree of quartz replacement . It does still have some structure decernable though . Cyads are not a cut and dried subject either , not alot is known about them .

I have a very nice opalized cycad sitting in my display. A friend has several agatized examples, and every one I've seen exhibit the diamond patterning somewhere on them. Also, there are still living cycads, making them one of the oldest surviving plants on earth. The Sago palms sold in plant shops are just one example of living cycads. End view, showing radiating structure. Side view, showing diamond shaped patterning Don

I do see a similarity in the line like structures with celllike looking tissue structures in the center of your specimen and peachfronts specimen .

I understand what a cycad is now -- indeed I have a living Sago Palm in my front yard that I've seen through everything from snowstorm to Hurricane Katrina, I just didn't know that it was a cycad. Folks, I am still out of town, so I have no access to libraries, etc. but can anyone suggest some online links, with photos, talking about the different kinds of petrified wood? I have a lot of unidentified pieces, and I'm struggling. I don't know how much I can get from photographs, as compared to having someone look at the pieces in person, but right now because of my travel it's going to be all I can do.
