Steve(Rocklicker) sent me a PM the other night saying he was coming down to San Jose this weekend and wanted to know if I wanted to meet at my local rock shop. Well, I guess you know the answer to that question. So he calls me today and I went down to meet him and we proceeded to have some fun. When I got there, he already had a box of poppy jasper going so I asked the guy that works there if he would bring out the poppy jasper he had in the back room. Next thing we know, the owner is laying down a rubber apron in the corner of the store, pulls up a couple of chairs for us, goes in the back room and brings out 2 5gal buckets of rock($1/lb) and lets us sit there and go through them. Poor Steve wound up going over what he had planned on spending, but still got some poppy jasper for free, while I restrained myself and made it out of there only spending $6.50. Then, we go out to our cars, and he says he brought me some rocks. And of course, I had some for him too. I wish I had brought more cuz he hands me a couple of chunks and some slabs of dryhead agates Gonna be some nice cabs from that stuff. I brought him some of the Guadalupe poppy jasper, a slab of jade, and a chunk of the rhodocrosite. Then I get home and get the mail and there's a large envelope in the mail box from Arkierockhound. I was expecting a check from her but when I opened the envelope, along with the check was a beautiful large slab, but I'm not sure what it is. Rockhounds ROCK! I'll post pics of everything tomorrow.
Thanks, guys, Ed

Now that sounds like a great way to spend the day. Can't wait to see your pics but am wondering what'samattau only coming out with six pounds of rocks. Too much restraint there Stoner.

Cher, I think it may have something to do with the fact that earlier in the week I spent $110 there and over $70 online!

Would any of us have thought we'd be paying for rocks? I guess it may seem kinda weird to people outside the hobby.

We had some fun, that's for sure. With a diminished wallet, a happy bunnch of rocks, and a smile on my face I left. In my defense, I got some supplies too, not just rocks. Too bad I forgot to leave with an optiloupe like I had originally intended to get. I got the rock home and went through them. Wow! That was one of the best rock shop trips so far! I was dreaming about poppies that night! It's so amazing how so many different patterns and colors come out of the same type of rock. There were lots of other great finds from the buckets. Please feel free to identify them. Most of our descriptions were "ooh, that looks cool" or "gosh, that looks interesting", so I don't know what I got. When I got home I couldn't contain myself. The saw was going as soon as I unpacked and soon after I was in front of the grinder. I didn't have enough time to finish, but I took photos (wet) of the progress. We had a great time, especially when the buckets came out. I'd do it again in a second, but next time I want to be the one who gets out the door for $6.50! Seriously Ed, how'd you do it! Anyway, the first photo is the cabs up to 600 grit, and the last three is the haul. Steve Poppy jasper, some Guadalupe too. Also Ed's rhodo and jade he passed on. A big dish of poppies! This weighed close to 14 pounds, but the guy at the rock shop said he would call it 13! What a nice guy. Rocks from the buckets More poppy jasper. I tried to resist that cut one, but it was hopeless.

Wow Steve, you did get some nice material. Maybe I should have bought more. Actually, I wanted you to get what you wanted cuz you don't have access to it like I do. Glad you had a good time and made out as good as you did.
