I found this piece while trying to get my garage cleaned up and fit my Jeep in there (yeah, right! LOL)... I'm wondering if this is a piece of bone? close up Thanks in advance for your help. Nate

I think coral , or bryozoa . The part with the holes , looks like voids from where crinoid stems have weathered out , making it likely , a marine fossil .

In the first pic, can you post a pic of the right end ? Could be bone, but need to see the end for cell structure.

Thanks Ted, I never thought about coral. Don, here are pictures of both sides. I don't really see any celular looking pattern, but then again, I don't know what I'm looking for. Thanks! Nate

I thought it looked crystalline , like calcite crystal too . Do think marine origin .

Ok, I did the query, and it timed out and I got an error msg from AT&T. The site said it was last updated in 1996, so I 'm guessing it's dead. Thanks anyway Don. I did search fossil coral pictures on google and some looks close, but nothing really matching.
I don't want to chop this up because it looks like a full piece. As a specimen, is it acceptable to window a small area to see if there's a cell structure under the rind?
Thanks, Nate

That's strange Nate. I just tried the link, and it worked perfectly. Must be something to do with AT&T. I'm on a wireless link.

The link worked Don, but when I submitted my choices on the form, it gave me the error. Here's some pix and a video of the polished end. Still doesn't look like a cell structure to me, more like moonstone. Below is the video. Click to play. Nate

The other end shimmers in small spots like the rest of it. There's also quite a few crystally vugs on it. I like how it looks so I'd rather not grind on that end. I'll cee if I can clean it up more and get that end to sparkle a little better. Is it vinegar that will fizz if it's calcite? I'd hate to soak it in acid and ruin it. I'll look up how to clean crystals.
Thanks, Nate

When i first seen your rock , it looked like two componets . i dont think the vinegar will tell you for sure . A drop of muriatic acid would fizz bigtime on calcite . I`m not sure about feldspar . I use muriatic alot ,on fossils , i find . sometimes , it does`nt fizz at all , cause , some of the fossils , are quartz .

I tried vinegar and it didn't do anything, so I am now soaking it in some of "The Works" cleaner. It's oxalic and sulfamic acid, and working nicely. I'll probably not leave it in there too much longer, just in case.

I'm guessing you may be right about the calcite Ted. The acid etched the polished area slightly, so I re-polished it. It cleaned up the crystals ok though. Some need more cleaning, but the vugs are all pretty small, so I'm leaving it. Also, I scratched the stone with my knife, so it's softer than I thought.
