I am new to the rock tumbling. I was wondering if I need to remove the excess rock ( I think its lime stone, but I am new to this) from the agate I have found or with it tumble off? Also can you tumble agate and jasper in the same batch? Thanks in advance.

I aint been doin this that long, but will let ya know what works for me. As for the matrix round the agate, Id just throw it in there an see what happens. Was talkn to a guy that does tumbln, he had some rock that had pretty good voids in it. He put a buncha smaller stuff in it, an the smaller stuff got stuck in the voids. It still tumbld but looks pretty kewl with the small stuff. As fer the other, Ive tumbld agate an jasper together an its turnd out. Later Clyde

You can tumble the softer stuff off. It should come off quickly so check in a day or two. It may make your slurry really thick. Agates and jaspers are similar hardness so no problem.

Welcome Brunomoki, This is the place to find all you need to know about rocks. You have already received good info on tumbling Agates and Jaspers. They tumble well together and the limestone, or whatever will tumble off in most cases. Don't hesitate to ask any questions about tumbling and you will receive answers from many years of experience. This is the place I learned from and they are great.

I've had similar problem with ptrified wood and agates thatI've found. They were found in caliche areas and usually covered with a thick white coat that just didn't wash off. Out of desperation, I bought a bottle of CLR household cleaner and poured it in a batch of rocks. Out came the caliche, dirt, and whatever else coated the outside. I wouldn't try this method with any othr soft stone, It will eat it up. And, be sure to wear gloves and glasses in case you splash. I hope this helps. Cindy Briggs
