Why cant i use 60/90 in a vibe? What if i need to remove a lot of material? Or will it destroy the bowl?

A vibe will maintain shapes so 60/90 mostly causes bowls to wear out. I've used it a time or two to remove matrix from fire agate rough, etc.

Also 60/90 is too heavy for a vibe. It tends to just settle to the bottom and not stick to the rocks where it is needed.

I used to sometimes use 60/90 in my mini-sonic but mini-sonic bowls are really thick and not prone to wearing out. I'd think it would really chew up the thinner bowl types and as Steve has said 60/90 is pretty heavy and the moisture level has to be very precise to keep the heavier grit stuck on the stones without settling to the bowl bottom.....Mel

That all makes sense but all i have ever heard before now is "its too aggressive" and well maybe tonight i was just feeling aggressive...lol! Actually though in my first few batches i am just wanting for more material removal, but oddly after about a week in 120-220, it seems like it sort of stops working, not braking down as much and not making as much slurry. I can see why people do the rough in a true tumbler but i guess im just trying to tweak my current formula...

In general, rotaries are for material removal. Vibes are for sanding and polishing

I tried 60/90 in my Lortone and in my Lot O', just to see how it would work. I didn't notice much of a difference except that the 60/90 broke down faster.

Generally in a vibe, grit is pretty much broken down in two days.

so...the reason not to use 60-90 in a vibe is because it is TOO AGGRESSIVE LOLOLOLOLOLOL! 24 hours in raytech tv-5 tumble vibe does this. score for those of you keeping track = 60/90 grit -1 drdrew -0

That is where they wear through with too much water also. The grit settles to that level. Lucky for you, those bowls are pretty inexpensive.

I had 60/90 do the same on Gy-Roc bowls. I have gotten a few extra batches out of thin bowls by putting a coating of epoxy, but the new bowl can be cheaper than lots of epoxy if it is a good one.
You might be able to get slightly better performance at a little more expense by buying straight 120 grit instead of 120/220.
As far as 120/220 losing its uumph after a few reloads, this si true. But it is the rock that is different. The initial sharp thin edges and bits of matrix come off quickly and make mud fast. Smoother rock, that still needs shaping, will not throw mud as fast, and you need to play with both grit and water to get something that forms the most effective and long lasting slurry. Sometimes it is more grit to make slurry faster, but on really hard rock, a little less grit actually seem to work faster. And what works in the Gy-Roc is not exactly what works best in the Vibra-sonic or Mini-sonic. I just feel my way along.
Happy vibbing!
