I'm learning to groove wrap and I need advise on matching wire ga. to a mm sized groove. And would square, round, or half round wire work best. I did some 18 ga. copper to a 1.4 mm groove and there seems to be to much of a gap between wire and groove for my liking. Being that silver is kinda pricey right now, I'd like to get it right the first time. All advise is appreciated
Thx...Gary

This prolly isn't much help guys, but the 22 ga square wire I have fits snug into the grooves I cut with my diamond disk on my dremel. According to my digital caliper, the disk is .6 mm or .025" thick. Nate Update : Here's a fantastic conversion chart I found online: www.reade.com/Conversion/wire_gauge.html

Nate, I believe this will help! Thanks for posting this. Looks to me according to the chart that 16 ga. wire is the closest to a 1.4mm groove slot. May have to call John for a 1.0mm cutter.
Daniel, that help?

Whoa, glad to see this conversation. I bought the groove bit for my gryphette and didn't even think to look at it's thickness. I don't have a fancy digital micrometer, only an old brass one so can't really get good measurement on it's thickness. Wonder how thick a groove it'll cut?

Daniel, I viewed Adrains tutorial, (a number of times) and it looks like he uses a round wire. I'm thinkin a square wire would just drop right in the groove and flush up with the edge of the stone if the groove depth was just right. exception--square or sharp angles. But then , I think it was texaswoody that just posted a beautiful tigereye groove wrap with 135 degree bends. Daniel, I think maybe dead soft half round for cabs with angles. It's all an experiment to me

Gary, I just don't post my wraps anymore. Wanna see them, go over to EIS. I quit putting them on there last year. Takes longer to take a picture than to do them. Have several hundred cabs ready to wrap right now. Want a picture of them too?

Ken, I should've known that you cabbed and wrapped with the beautiful work you do on those knife scales. I know that you could groove wrap, I was just trying to be funny!

Holy cow Ken, those are gorgeous. What is that bright yellow one at 2:00? I'm maybe, at a tenth of what you have there

I use square half hard wire for my groove wraps. For the tight corners, I'll use the pliers to make the bend and try to get it as sharp of a bend as possible.

I have only just done a few grove wraps with a gryphon head. I used 22G half round dead soft. I felt it was a little loose in there but it works. I want to order some 20G half round. I think that should fit just fine. I put the flat side out and they looked really good. Nate's cutting disc looks like it makes a completely squared cut and that would be why his square goes in so well. Ken, those cabs are piling up there. I really miss seeing your wraps here! Fran
