Wood?

I haven't done too much wood but I thought the material was harder. This piece cut like butter, even got gooey on the dremel diamond wheel, and when I accidentally dropped it on the garage floor getting ready for final polish, it broke. I also noticed as I was sanding it that it developed little bumps that protruded outward, never had that happen before. (If you look at the pic really close you can sort of see the little bumps protruding at the bottom, for the life of me I could not get a picture of them...but they're there.) Can someone tell me if I'm right or wrong? Thanks! ~Krystee

Krystee: Your material looks more like a banded jasper than wood. Woody

Could be wood. But all wood is not hard. I have some that is harder than anything else I've ever cut. Then some of it is very soft. Just depends on what type of material replaced the wood.

Might also be a travertine, that is not hard at all and would gum up a dremel and cut like butter.
Where'd it come from?

I don't know exactly... sorry. I came across it in a container of combined odds and ends and didn't remember seeing it before.

I would have said it looks almost like a variety of onyx to me....except for the grainy break...onyx wouldn't have a fracture like that..neither would most jaspers or agates...they tend to have a very smooth fracture...
