Hey all! Just curious if any of the members here, or your friends, happen to have an Australian Terrier. I've just started adoption proceedings today and may have her home by the end of next week. I'm looking at adopting a 2 year old female named Rosie. She's a red Aussie, but really her coat is more sort of a burnt honey kind of color. My wife has no idea I'm doing this, I've always wanted one since working with a friend of mine in LA years ago. He had an Aussie he brought with him to work every day. Was just the cutest dog. Now I need me a lap dog and traveling companion and decided yesterday to start looking, and call it strange, bizarre, or just coincidence an Aussie was listed on Wednesday about 30 minutes south of where I live. Not sure if the Almighty is intervening here and presenting me with this opportunity, if it's fate or just chance, but soon as I saw her I knew I wanted to add her to my family. Anyway, my wife and older daughter both have birthdays coming up in March and I wanted to have a surprise for them, so may have one really early. Course she's gonna be my dog, but I won't mention that right away...lol. So here she is in all her glory, say hi to Rosie, and keep your fingers crossed for me that I clear the adoption proceedings... Just can't get out of my head how weird this is. They listed this dog for adoption on Wednesday. On Thursday I go looking for a dog and email the Australian Terrier Rescue people and they say they have one 30 minutes away? I truly asked the kind lady if she was playing a joke...

I hope it all works out and Rosie is all that you want her to be! From what I have heard, they are smart and just like most little terriers, kind of aggressive at times towards other dogs since they do not seem to know how small they are. I have a terrier mix and he looks a lot like Rosie. He is 14 lbs and thinks he is a big dog. He bosses the cat and our other dog, a cockapoo who is double his size at 28 lbs. They are good with people but can decide they train you instead of you training them if you let them. That is a hard one for most folks. She may come with some bad habits but then again, they are really smart and can learn what you want quickly! Good Luck! Fran

Thanks Fran, and yes, I've already heard about a couple of bad habits she has. My wife and I have played host to many pets over the past 20 years or so. We purchased a Canaan from a breeder for my first daughter's birth present, then from there we have adopted two cats, adopted a very aggressive Min-Pin, purchased two Min-Pin brothers when my Canaan passed away, adopted a Sheltie. We've also played host to several rescue dogs over the years and my older daughter is a weekly volunteer with the local ASPCA chapter, she visits sheltered animals to allow them personal time with people, she cares for them, and helps them through adoption proceedings. Our family has a huge love of animals.
Currently we only have the Sheltie (Jax) at home with us, and he is obviously depressed and lonely. He spends every day with me but when I'm working he sits either at my feet or in my office doorway, staring out the back door into the view of the lake, and just looks so forlorn. I think he will enjoy the company of a new pal more than any of us.
Now the challenge is on, and luckily I work from home, as I will need to spend an exorbitant amount of time with Rosie to insure she gets the attention and training she needs. Terriers as a breed need a pretty firm hand during training, but do not withstand abuse well and turn to hiding within their own shell if you treat them poorly. They can also become very destructive if not properly handled and trained. I've already been told, and you can see from the photo, that Rosie was a puppy mill dog and has confidence issues. She stakes her claim on only one person hides behind them when anyone else is around. She's not bad with other dogs, just people tend to scare her. That tells me she's been abused or mis-handled at some time in her past.
She is coming to a house full of love, with caring and knowledgeable people who will give her what she needs to blossom into her true self. I personally love terriers and find that, when properly raised, their attitudes and characters can provide you with endless hours of joy. I am so excited for this to happen, I can not tell you how much I'm looking forward to this!

I got a terrier jack russell mix, I wanted to give him away for the first two years, but after 5 he finally has me trained, and it only took 1 year for him to train Ken. We put in a doggie door last month, after three days he was use to comming and going as he likes he truly thinks he owns the house and we are his servents that he allows to live in. ;D Donna

She looks sweet and from all you have said, it sounds like Rosie has found the just right family and forever home. Best of luck for a smooth adoption.

Fate, thats was it is. You sound like you will be a great dad & family for this little one. You know what you are up against so I thinks everything will be just fine. I groom dogs for a living and teach agility for dogs, your little Rosie would be fantastic at it , terriers are super fast & want to have a challenge plus it is a great way to burn off energy. Nancy

Wondering if you have heard anything on the Rosie adoption? I used to do home visits for Great Dane rescue. I am a big terrier fan. Love the tenacity....and hate it too. I have always found an obedience class is a good way to bond with the dog and introduce them to working around other dogs . It also helps tremendously with their confidence. I have never seen an Australian terrier, but she looks like the perfect size for a traveling companion.
