Next phases are moving along now. For those of you that didn't see the cab Dan (highplainsdrifter) made for me: Phil (steelandstone) is now in possession of the cab to do the silverwork on it. Just received the obsidian slab from Mark (slabcabber) today: It is 1/2 an inch thick and about 8" x 5". Thanks again Mark. This will be the base for the Japanese gate Adrian is manufacturing for me. The cab will hang from the gate. Will update as this continues to progress. Todd

Still loving that cab! Lost track of your old post, if memory serves.... you got your black belt! I again want to congratulate you!!! You earned the honor and this piece! Can't wait to see it finished!

Krystee, haven't earned it yet but expect to by the end of the year. I just knew this project would take a long time to pull together with all the different artisans working on it (on two different continents) so I started the wheels rolling early.
My progression through the belts has slowed a little bit as my instructor now has me teaching one day a week, so I don't get as much work in as I used to. But if all go well, black should still happen this year.

Aha, so this is the slab you're gonna send me! As I see from the picture, the faces of the "slab" are not paralel. So how would you like me to polish it for you? On its already cut surface, resulting a polished "slope", or would you like to cut it firstly and make some sort of a horizontal plateau?

You sure that's obsidian and not black slag glass? Looks just like some of mine.

Slabcabber told me it was obsidian.
Not sure what you mean Adrian. How can you tell if the faces are parallel to each other when you only see one? In any case, I'll get it sent out soon and you can see it in person - then we can figure out the best way to go from there.

Maybe the photo tricked me, but it looks like the visible face and the hidden face join together on the edge which I can see in the photo (the slightly chipped line).
But I could be wrong, it's hard to figure out from the photo. Now at a closer look, I think I know what tricked me: I thought the dark triangle in the right side is a sort of cross section of the slab (revealing its thickness), but in fact it could be just part of the visible face (a natural break area where the saw didn't cut).

I just knew this project would take a long time to pull together with all the different artisans working on it (on two different continents) so I started the wheels rolling early. Especially when the silversmith takes toooo long to get his part done. ;D I should have it back on it's way to you first of the week. I have to say the cab is quite impressive in person . H.P.D did a great job on it.

Hey Phil, please post a pic here for me before you send it - my camera skills are non-existant. And now that the silversmith is ready to finish, the customer is waffling on final design elements...

Hey guys, don't rush with the metal part of the project! Let me drill the obsidian firstly, to give you the precisse distance between the two holes. I think it's easier to match the metal gate to the distance between the holes, rather than pinpointing the holes after the given distance between the pilars.
