We have been buying masonry sand at a local landscaping place. A couple of weeks ago I spotted a large pile of rock.I asked them where it was from, and they said La Grange. The hair stood up on the back of my neck as I remembered well the finds that Mel has made in his area from material coming from there. We had a little rain this morning and I knew the rocks would be pretty clean. I came home with about 200 lbs. Some of the flint may be banded. The majority of this material is flint, almost all looks the same on the outside.A few petwood, no palm. I really wont know what I have until I knaw on them a little. But anyway, pretty easy hunting, kinda overwhelming. Here is a pic of the end cuts off the best.Plain colors. snuffy

Shucks, I was hoping you would find a big ol' palm root in there. Be sure to show us what it looks like slabbed.

That should be a treasure trove. I saw what appears to be some banding in that pile you collected. I'm eager to see some of that slabbed.

I dont want any of you out there to be envious of my good fortune in finding that rockpile.I ought to have known it was too cheap and too easy. There wont be any pics forthcoming of this flint, aint worth the time and effort.Wasted about 35 saw cuts.

I love rockhounding in such piles, too. I have several pet woods from such piles.
Are you sure the rock in the left margin of the 2nd to last picture wasn't a piece of palm wood? It looks like that in the photo.

Too bad it didn't work out. At least you have 200 more pounds of rock, and that is a good thing - if not exactly what you expected...

That's too bad, snuffy. The rocks in the last photo really looked promising!

They really looked like they had a lot of promise. I guess these things happen, thank goodness not too often. Tanya

Good looking flint Snuffy! I'm wondering if the gravel pit is getting into an area that is pretty shy on wood now. My last trip to the rock pile was the first time I found absolutely no wood at all. The previous trip there was a log on the pile so large I couldn't even lift it. The other gravel seems pretty lean on good rock too but I've been told with the Eagle pass material that the best agate layer is in the top part of the gravel pit so as they get deeper agate gets more scarce....Mel
