Hi everyone. new to this site. writing about post I saw about someone wanting info on status of nowak opal mine and experiences. I started mining there in 1977. I believe the mine is closed by current owners but do not know for sure. Most post I can find are two to three years old. Will try and go there in a couple of weeks and find out whats going on. Anyone can contact me at opalminer1978@yahoo.com or phone me at 805-455-4879. thank you

You are talking about the opal mines off the 15 right? Out on the way to Ridgecrest near the Red Rock Canyon, correct?

My impression is that the mine claims have expired and state park regulations prohibit collecting, so I'm afraid Nowack and Barnett opals are both effectively extinct species.
Trails.com and some other sites dating back into the late 80's and early 90's seem to indicate that their still open for fee collecting, but I see more modern information generally agreeing they are not.
