Hi All, My 7 yr old son and I are new to the tumbling rocks. Finishing our first batch tonight and need more rocks. I live in the SF Bay Area, the local stone is just mud stone, nothing I can tumble.
Where's the best place to get rocks? I looked on eBay, but wasn't impressed by the selection. Your help is greatly appreciated.
Stuart

Not sure there but drive South to Big Sur and on through San Simeon and you pick up nice beach rocks. I think the San Francisco rock show is coming up too. Also Stonesthatrock, Catmandew and others on this forum sell rock.

I was born in the SF bay area and lived there for years. Most the rocky beaches north of SF bay have colorful jasper and chert. There are good agate nodules to be found in the Berkeley Hills. Good jasper in E. Palo Alto down by the yacht harbor. Also some good jasper down by Coyote Hills. Agate nodule bearing basalt is exposed on several of the rocky beaches south of Half Moon Bay (North of Pebble beach is one) Problem is access in the Bay area and not a lot of rock is exposed because of all the silt and mud. If you find rocky areas though, there is some good stuff to be found. North of you around Clear lake and Pope Valley there's jasper, quartz crystals and obsidian. Niles Creek and any of the big creeks you can access down around Morgan Hill have jasper and most the coast range passes from the Bay area clear to Paso Robles have chert and jasper. If you go to the library and find Sinkankas' mineral books ( Gemstones of North America-three volumes), he lists a lot of bay area locations....Mel

This saturday there is a rock sale at the sacramento, rock and mineral society. 10 CENTS A POUND!!!! 4205 LeMay St Mather Field, Rancho Cordova, CA sacramentomineralsociety.org/ ~ The news feed shows the sale for the 21st, because the sale was then, but the sale is this next saturday (28th) too! They have some good stuff! I got about 140lbs for $14. But its true value is roughly $300, or more! ~Colt Chainmail

Hi Stuart. Welcome to the forum. I grew up in Walnut Creek so I know what you mean. If you don't mind a bit of a drive, you can head north to Bolinas. They have beach agates there. There's also Consolidated Rock and Mineral over by Vacaville - they have tumbling stones and grit (5115 Quinn Road, Vacaville, CA 95688-9452). They're on 80 just east of 505. The guys there are really helpful. The Gem Trails books are really good as well. I use both the Gem Trails of Northern California and GT of Southern California.
